Da Nang is central Vietnam's coastal hub and the launch point for two of the country's most rewarding sights: the marble-and-cave hills just south of the city and the lantern-lit old port of Hoi An. The port itself is industrial, so the day is entirely about where you go from it, and the options range from a 15-minute drive to a full hour.

What to do on a day in Da Nang

  • Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son), a cluster of five limestone and marble hills riddled with caves, tunnels, and Buddhist sanctuaries, about a 35-minute drive with elevator access to the summit
  • Lady Buddha at Linh Ung Pagoda on the Son Tra Peninsula, a 67-meter white statue overlooking the bay, about a 15-minute drive and free to enter
  • Hoi An Ancient Town, the UNESCO-listed former trading port with the Japanese Covered Bridge and old assembly halls, about a 60-minute drive each way
  • Dragon Bridge and the riverfront in central Da Nang, about a 20-minute drive
  • My Khe Beach, the long white-sand strand, about a 20-minute drive from the port

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Tien Sa Port on the western edge of the Son Tra Peninsula, an industrial container terminal roughly 10 km from the city center with nothing walkable nearby. You must arrange transport: a ship shuttle, a private car for the day, or a roughly 500-meter walk out to the port gate to hail a Grab rideshare and avoid the in-port vehicle fee. One day is enough for Da Nang's own sights or for Hoi An, but the hour each way to Hoi An means you should commit to one focus, not both.

Weather and when to visit

  • Spring dry season (March to May). Typically sunny with manageable heat, around 75 to 88F, calm seas, and rare rain. The most comfortable window for sightseeing and the caves.
  • Summer dry season (June to August). Typically the sunniest and driest stretch but genuinely hot, often 86 to 95F. The clearest skies, but the Marble Mountains climb and Hoi An streets are demanding in midday heat.
