Haines is the quiet alternative to neighboring Skagway: no float planes overhead, no jewelry-store gauntlet, just a small fishing town wrapped around a restored 1904 Army post under the Chilkat and Coast mountains. The ship ties up at the foot of that post, so the best of the day starts the moment you walk down the gangway. It earns the day on scale and stillness, not on attractions.
What to do on a day in Haines
- Fort William H. Seward, the National Historic Landmark a few blocks uphill from the pier, where the old officers' row and parade ground now hold galleries and the Alaska Indian Arts carving studio
- Sheldon Museum, about a ten-minute flat walk north, for Tlingit material culture and Chilkat Valley history
- Hammer Museum, also roughly ten minutes north, an oddball one-room collection of more than 2,000 hammers that is more interesting than it sounds
- American Bald Eagle Foundation, a half mile from the dock, with a natural-history museum and live raptors year round
- Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve on the Chilkat River, reachable by a short van transfer, where thousands of eagles gather on the late salmon run
- Chilkat River rafting or a flightseeing hop to nearby glaciers, both common short excursions out of the small-boat harbor
Getting ashore
Ships use the Port Chilkoot dock at the foot of Fort Seward, a few blocks south of the town center, so Fort Seward is a five-minute walk and downtown is about a half mile on flat, paved road. One day covers the town, the fort, and the museums easily on foot; the eagle preserve and river trips need a short transfer but still fit a single call.

Weather and when to visit
- May to early June (early season). Typically the driest stretch, highs in the 50s F climbing toward low 60s, with long daylight and a real chance of crisp, clear mountain views. Pack layers and a shell anyway.
- Mid June to July (peak). Warmest of the season, highs around the mid to upper 60s F, lows near 50, generally drier than most Alaska ports. Morning low cloud and mist are common but often burn off.
- August to September (late season). Cooler and the wettest part of the season, highs in the upper 50s to low 60s F, more overcast and rain. This is when the eagle numbers climb on the late salmon run.
