Victoria is the small, walkable capital of British Columbia on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, an unhurried city of heritage stone, gardens, and a working Inner Harbour. Most Alaska sailings call here late in the day, often into the evening, so the visit is a relaxed half day rather than a full one. Ships dock at Ogden Point, about two kilometres from the Inner Harbour.
What to do on a day in Victoria
- The Inner Harbour, the postcard heart of the city, ringed by the Fairmont Empress hotel and the floodlit Parliament Buildings, about a 20 to 30 minute walk from the pier along the David Foster waterfront pathway
- Afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress, the grand 1908 harbourfront hotel and a long-standing Victoria ritual, worth booking ahead
- The Royal BC Museum, the province flagship museum of natural and First Nations history, on the harbour a short walk from the Empress
- Fishermans Wharf, a small floating community of bright houseboats and seafood kiosks just west of the Inner Harbour
- Beacon Hill Park, a large waterfront park with gardens and Strait of Juan de Fuca views, walkable from downtown
Getting ashore
Ships berth at Ogden Point, roughly two kilometres from the Inner Harbour. The waterfront David Foster pathway makes the walk into town pleasant at about 20 to 30 minutes, and a frequent low-cost shuttle and taxis also run from the terminal. Because Alaska itineraries usually schedule Victoria as a short, late-day call, often into the evening, plan around the compact downtown rather than distant sights. Butchart Gardens, the celebrated estate gardens, sits about 22 kilometres north and is realistic only on a booked tour given the short evening call.

Weather and when to visit
- Spring (Apr to Jun). Cool and often dry, daytime highs in the low to mid 60s Fahrenheit, with the gardens near their peak. Pack layers and a light rain shell.
- Summer (Jul to Sep). The mildest and driest stretch, highs in the high 60s to low 70s and long daylight, the most comfortable time for the harbour and parks.
- Autumn (Oct). Cooler and wetter as the season turns, highs in the high 50s and more frequent rain, so bring an umbrella.
