Killybegs is Ireland's largest fishing port, a working harbor town on Donegal Bay along the Wild Atlantic Way in the country's rugged northwest. The town itself is small and walkable, but the day is really about what sits a short drive out: Slieve League, sea cliffs nearly three times the height of the Cliffs of Moher.

What to do on a day in Killybegs (County Donegal)

• Drive 25 minutes to the Slieve League (Sliabh Liag) cliffs and the Bunglass viewpoint, one of the great vantage points on the Wild Atlantic Way at roughly 600 m above the Atlantic
• Take a Sliabh Liag boat trip from Teelin Pier to see the cliffs from the water, around 90 minutes and a completely different perspective from the clifftop
• Visit the Killybegs Maritime and Heritage Centre in the old Donegal Carpet factory, home to the looms that wove carpets for state rooms and ocean liners
• Walk Fintra Beach, a blue-flag golden-sand strand a few minutes from town and one of Ireland's safest swimming beaches
• Browse the main street for Donegal tweed and Irish woollens, then eat fresh fish landed at the pier

Weather and when to visit

• May to June (early season). Typically cool and breezy off the Atlantic, daytime highs around 14 to 17C, frequent showers, and roughly 90 to 100 mm of rain across the month. Bring a windproof layer.
• July to August (peak season). Typically the mildest window, highs around 17 to 18C, long daylight, but still wet and changeable with rain on many days and sun never guaranteed.
• September (late season). Typically cooler and noticeably wetter, highs around 16C and rainfall climbing toward 140 mm in the month, with bigger Atlantic swell that can affect the Teelin boat trips.
