Greencastle is a working fishing village on the Inishowen Peninsula at the mouth of Lough Foyle, used as a tender anchorage that puts ships within reach of Derry and Ireland's wild northern coast. The village itself is small and genuine, a colorful harbor and a Norman castle ruin, with the bigger day-trips, Derry's walls and the Giant's Causeway, lying inland by road.

What to do on a day in Greencastle (County Donegal)

  • Northburgh Castle, the de Burgh Norman ruin from 1305 on the headland, about a 15-minute walk along the shore from the pier
  • Inishowen Maritime Museum and Planetarium, in the old coastguard station in the village, covering Armada wrecks and Famine emigration
  • Greencastle harbour and shore walk toward Moville, with views across Lough Foyle to Magilligan Point
  • Derry's 17th-century walls and Bogside, a 25 to 30 minute drive, walkable once there
  • Malin Head, Ireland's northernmost point, and the Inishowen coastal drive by private tour
  • The Giant's Causeway, the basalt columns roughly 90 minutes each way by road for those willing to commit the day

Getting ashore

This is a tender port: ships anchor off Greencastle and ferry passengers to a small pier with limited facilities, not a terminal. The village and its castle and museum are walkable; everything else needs arranged transport, with Derry the natural anchor for the day. One day is enough for the village plus either Derry or a stretch of Inishowen, but not the Giant's Causeway and a meaningful look at anything else.
