Oban is a Victorian seaside town on Scotland's west coast that bills itself as the seafood capital of Scotland and the gateway to the Hebrides. Ships anchor in the bay and tender straight to the North Pier in the middle of town, so the harbor, the distillery, and a granite folly on the hill above are all on foot. It is a compact, genuinely walkable call where one day is plenty.

What to do on a day in Oban

  • Oban Distillery, one of Scotland's oldest and smallest, sitting in the middle of town with hour-long guided tastings
  • McCaig's Tower, the Colosseum-like granite folly above town reached by a 20 to 30 minute uphill walk for views over the bay to Mull
  • The harbourfront, walkable end to end in under 15 minutes, lined with seafood shacks and the green sheds of the catch landings
  • Oban War and Peace Museum, a free 45 minute stop on the waterfront covering the town's wartime role
  • Dunollie Castle and museum, a ruined MacDougall stronghold a longer walk or short transfer north of the centre

Getting ashore

There is no cruise berth; ships anchor in Oban Bay and tender to the North Pier pontoons, which land you directly in the centre with step-free access and a 5 to 10 minute walk to the main street. The town is small enough that a half day covers the harbour, distillery, museum, and the climb to McCaig's Tower with lunch in between.

Weather and when to visit

  • May-June (early season). Typically the driest and sunniest stretch for this coast, highs around 13 to 15C, around 6 hours of sun a day in May, though showers are always possible
  • July-August (peak season). Typically the warmest, highs around 15 to 16C, but also among the wettest; expect changeable skies and pack a waterproof layer
  • September (late season). Typically cooling and increasingly wet as the rainy stretch sets in, highs in the low teens C, often blustery
