Dún Laoghaire is the Victorian harbor town south of Dublin where ships anchor in the bay and tender you ashore, with the DART commuter train at the harbor putting central Dublin under 30 minutes away. The town itself rewards a slower day: granite piers built for the old mail steamers, a Martello tower where Joyce's Ulysses opens, and a famous sea-swimming spot at Sandycove. You choose between the city and the coast, and both are easy.

What to do on a day in Dún Laoghaire (Dublin)

  • The East Pier, a roughly 1 km granite-walled walk out to a Victorian lighthouse, past the bandstand, the classic Dún Laoghaire stroll
  • James Joyce Tower & Museum at Sandycove, the Martello tower where Ulysses opens, free to enter and a 15-minute coastal walk along The Metals path
  • The Forty Foot, the 200-year-old open-air sea-swimming spot beside the tower, for the brave
  • The National Maritime Museum of Ireland, inside the former Mariners' Church in town
  • Dublin city by DART: Trinity College and the Book of Kells, Dublin Castle, and the Guinness Storehouse, about 25 to 30 minutes by train
  • People's Park and, on Sundays, its food and craft market, an easy in-town option

Getting ashore

Dún Laoghaire is a tender port: the ship anchors in Dublin Bay and tenders land at the historic harbor, with the DART station a 5 to 10 minute walk away. Central Dublin is under 30 minutes by train (trains run every 10 to 15 minutes), so one day handles either a city run or a coastal walk to Sandycove, but not a deep dive into both.

Weather and when to visit

  • May to September (Irish cruise season). Cool and changeable, typical summer highs around 17 to 19C, warmest in July. Showers are possible any day and the piers are exposed to wind off the bay, so bring a layer. May and June tend to be the driest and sunniest of the season.
