Kobe is a compact, cosmopolitan port city wedged between the sea and the Rokko mountains, opened to foreign trade in 1868 and still wearing that history in its Chinatown and hillside foreign quarter. The waterfront where you dock is the city's front yard, with the Port Tower, a harbor museum, and the BE KOBE sign all within a short walk. It also works as a launch pad for Kyoto, Osaka, Himeji, and Nara by fast train.

What to do on a day in Kobe

• Meriken Park beside the pier, home to the red Port Tower, the Kobe Maritime Museum, and the photogenic BE KOBE sign on the harbor
• Nankinmachi, Kobe's Chinatown, a lively few blocks of steamed-bun stalls and lantern-lined lanes about a twelve-minute walk away
• Kitano-cho, the hillside district of preserved Western merchant houses from the port's opening era, reached via Motomachi
• Motomachi shopping street, a long covered arcade of more than 300 shops running inland from the waterfront
• Harborland, the waterside dining and shopping complex just west across the harbor
• A fast-train day trip to Himeji Castle (about 40 minutes), Osaka (about 22 minutes), or Kyoto (under an hour) from Sannomiya

Getting ashore

Explora's smaller ships typically use Naka Pier next to Meriken Park, putting the Port Tower five minutes away and Chinatown about twelve; larger ships use Kobe Port Terminal on Shinko Pier No. 4, with the Port Liner monorail to Sannomiya in roughly ten minutes and a free shuttle to Chinatown and Motomachi. One day is plenty for the waterfront, Chinatown, and Kitano on foot, or you can trade the local sights for a single train day trip.

Weather and when to visit

• Spring (late March to May), the main Japan cruise window. Mild and among the most pleasant, daytime highs roughly in the 60s to low 70s F, with cherry blossom in late March to early April and generally manageable rain.
• Autumn (October to November). Cooling and comfortable, highs in the 60s to low 70s F, clear stretches and autumn color in the surrounding hills.
