Kusadasi is a Turkish Aegean resort town whose real draw lies 19 km inland: Ephesus, one of the best-preserved classical cities in the Mediterranean and once the second city of the Roman Empire. The ship docks in the center of town, so you can shop the bazaar and walk the seafront on foot, but the day is built around the short transfer to the ruins. It earns the day on Ephesus alone, with the marble streets, the Library of Celsus and the great theater intact enough to read the ancient city plan as you walk it.

What to do on a day in Kusadasi (Ephesus)

  • Ephesus archaeological site: Curetes Street, the two-story facade of the Library of Celsus, and the Great Theatre that seated around 25,000
  • The Terrace Houses inside Ephesus, the covered hillside mansions with in-situ mosaics and frescoes (a separate ticket, and the part most day visitors skip)
  • House of the Virgin Mary on Bulbul Mountain above Ephesus, the chapel revered as Mary's last home, a common add-on by road
  • Selcuk's Basilica of St John and the lone surviving column of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, a few minutes beyond Ephesus
  • Sirince, a hillside former Greek village known for its fruit wines and old houses, a short drive into the hills from Selcuk
  • In Kusadasi itself: Pigeon Island (Guvercinada) and its little fortress on a causeway, and the Oküz Mehmet Pasha Caravanserai by the bazaar, both walkable from the pier

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Ege Port (Scala Nuova) right in town; you walk straight off into a shopping arcade and reach the bazaar and seafront in 5-10 minutes. Ephesus is about a 25-minute drive (19 km), reachable by tour coach or taxi, and a typical visit runs 5-6 hours with the add-on sites. One day comfortably covers Ephesus plus one or two of the nearby sites if you keep moving.

Weather and when to visit

  • April to May (spring, common shoulder calls). Mild and pleasant, typical highs around 20-26C (high 60s to high 70s F), low rainfall by May, good walking weather for the largely unshaded ruins.
  • June to August (summer peak). Hot and dry, highs often 30C plus with strong sun and almost no rain; Ephesus offers little shade, so a morning visit, water and a hat matter.
  • September to October (autumn). Warm and still mostly dry, highs easing from the low 30s back toward the mid 20s C, sea still warm, among the most comfortable months for the site.
