Fusina is a cruise terminal on the mainland edge of the Venetian Lagoon, about three miles west of Venice across the water, opened in fall 2024 as ships moved out of the historic city. The terminal building itself sits between mudflats and the Marghera industrial zone, so the appeal is entirely Venice on the far side of the lagoon: St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace, the Grand Canal, and the Rialto. The day comes down to the transfer, then a tightly focused few hours in one of the most concentrated historic centers in Europe.

What to do on a day in Fusina (Venice)

  • Piazza San Marco: the Basilica di San Marco with its mosaics, the Campanile bell tower, and the open square ringed by the historic Florian and Quadri cafes
  • Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace): the Gothic seat of the old Venetian republic, with the Bridge of Sighs alongside
  • Grand Canal by vaporetto: the water-bus ride past the palazzi to the Rialto Bridge, the single best way to read the city
  • San Polo and the Frari: the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, whose interior is painted top to bottom by Tintoretto
  • Ca' d'Oro: the lacework Gothic palace on the Grand Canal, now an art gallery

Getting ashore

Ships berth at the Fusina terminal on the lagoon's mainland edge; the practical route in is a cruise-line-arranged water shuttle from the pier across to the Venice waterfront, or public ferry line 16 to the Zattere (about 30 minutes) and then a vaporetto onward to San Marco. One day is enough for the San Marco core plus a Grand Canal ride, but only if you commit to the transfer early and do not try to also reach the outer islands.

Weather and when to visit

  • May and June (start of the Mediterranean season). Mild to warm, typically in the high 60s to low 80s F; June is statistically the rainiest month but usually as short heavy showers rather than all-day rain.
  • July and August (peak summer). Hot and humid, often pushing past 86 F, with the lagoon air heavy and the squares crowded by mid-morning.
  • September and October (shoulder). Warm and easing in September into the cooler upper-50s to upper-60s F by late October; acqua alta high-water tides become more likely from October onward, so low-lying San Marco can flood briefly at peak tide.
