Corfu is the greenest of the Ionian islands, and its UNESCO-listed Old Town carries four centuries of Venetian, French, and British rule in its arcaded streets and twin sea fortresses. The Esplanade, the cricket pitch left by the British, and the French-built Liston arcade sit between two forts, making the historic core an easy half-day on foot, with hilltop palaces and a famous monastery islet a short drive out.

What to do on a day in Corfu

• The Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio), the Venetian sea fort on the eastern point with views over town and the Ionian and a small church inside
• The Liston, the French-built arcaded promenade of cafes facing the Spianada, modeled on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris
• Spianada Square (the Esplanade), one of the largest squares in Europe, with the British-era bandstand and cricket ground
• Saint Spyridon Church, whose red-domed bell tower is the tallest in the Old Town and holds the relics of the island's patron saint
• The New Fortress (Neo Frourio), a maze of Venetian stone tunnels and ramparts above the harbor
• Kanoni and the Vlacherna Monastery causeway looking out to Mouse Island, a short drive or bus ride south of town

Getting ashore

The cruise terminal is about 1.5 km west of the Old Town, walkable in 20 to 25 minutes along the water, or reached by the number 15 local bus, a taxi, or a cruise shuttle. One day is comfortable for the Old Town on foot; add a taxi or tour if you want the Achilleion Palace or Paleokastritsa beyond the center.

Weather and when to visit

• May to October (the typical call season). Typically warm and sunny. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant for walking, while July and August are hot, often around 30 C and higher, with strong midday sun. The sea stays warm from June into October.
