Dubrovnik is a walled stone city on the Adriatic whose intact medieval ramparts and marble main street make it one of the most complete fortified ports in Europe. The signature experience is walking the full circuit of the walls, looking down over terracotta roofs to the sea. It earns the day, but with a logistics wrinkle: the cruise port is across town from the Old Town, so the visit is a managed transfer rather than a step off the gangway.

What to do on a day in Dubrovnik

  • The City Walls circuit, roughly two kilometers of ramparts and towers walked above the rooftops and harbor
  • Stradun (Placa), the polished limestone main street running between Pile Gate and the Bell Tower
  • The Rector's Palace, the Gothic-Renaissance seat of the old Ragusan republic, now a museum
  • The Franciscan Monastery, home to one of Europe's oldest working pharmacies dating to 1317
  • Fort Lovrijenac, the freestanding clifftop fortress just outside the western walls
  • The cable car to Mount Srd for the panoramic view down onto the whole walled city

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Port Gruz, about 3 kilometers from the Old Town, reached by shuttle, public bus 1A/1B, or taxi to Pile Gate. One day covers the walled city and the walls comfortably; the cable car or Lovrijenac are add-ons if your time ashore is long.

Weather and when to visit

  • April to May (spring calls). Typically mild and freshening, highs from the high teens toward 20°C by May, greener surroundings, and a moderate chance of showers.
  • June to August (peak summer). Typically hot and dry, highs around 24 to 27°C, intense sun on the unshaded walls, and the year's lowest rainfall.
  • September to October (autumn calls). Typically warm in September near 23°C, cooling through October as Adriatic autumn rain returns and showers become more frequent.
