Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades, and its main town Ermoupoli is a working neoclassical city rather than a whitewashed resort village. The 19th-century marble streets, an opera house modeled on La Scala, and two hilltop quarters (Orthodox Vrodado and Catholic Ano Syros) make this a port you walk rather than transfer out of. Small premium and expedition ships call here precisely because it is one of the few Cyclades stops that still feels lived-in.

What to do on a day in Syros

• Plateia Miaouli, the marble central square, with the Ernst Ziller-designed Town Hall facing it
• Apollo Theatre, a small 1860s opera house built as a miniature of Milan's La Scala
• Vaporia district northeast of the harbor, where sea captains built neoclassical mansions along the water
• Ano Syros, the medieval Catholic settlement on the hill: a labyrinth of stepped alleys reached by a few hundred steep stone steps from the center, or a short taxi if you would rather skip the climb
• Archaeological Museum of Syros, a few minutes' walk from Miaouli Square

Getting ashore

Ships dock right in Ermoupoli and the town center, Miaouli Square and the waterfront, is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the pier. One day is comfortable for the lower town plus Ano Syros; the steep climb to Ano Syros is the only real exertion, and a taxi solves it.

Weather and when to visit

• May to mid-June. Warm and dry, daytime averages around 20 to 25C (68 to 77F), reliable sun, and crowds that do not really build until mid-June.
• September to October. Still warm into early autumn, averaging around 24C (75F) in September and cooling gradually through October, with rain becoming more likely later in the month.
