Getting ashore

Ships dock at the dedicated cruise quay right at the edge of the old town, with a free elevator and a walk of only a couple hundred meters to Tito Square, so no tendering and no transfer are needed. The old town is small enough to cover in two to three hours, which makes Koper an easy base for a half-day trip out to Piran, the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, or across the border to Trieste.

Weather and when to visit

• May to June. Typically warm and mostly dry, daytime highs from the low 20s C in May into the upper 20s by June, with comfortable sea breezes. Good walking weather for the open squares and the climb up the bell tower.
• July to September. Typically warm to hot, highs around 28 to 30 C through midsummer, easing in September. The cold bora wind that affects this coast is mainly a winter feature and is rarely a factor in the calling months.
