Kotor is a fortified medieval town wedged at the head of the Bay of Kotor, with stone lanes, Venetian churches, and a mountain wall climbing the cliff behind it. The approach is the rare case where the sail-in is half the experience, the ship threading a deep fjord-like bay for about an hour before the town appears. It earns the day because everything worth seeing sits inside a compact walled core a two-minute walk from the pier.

What to do on a day in Kotor

• St. Tryphon Cathedral, the Romanesque cathedral consecrated in 1166, with its twin towers off the main square
• The city walls and San Giovanni (St. John) Fortress, reached by roughly 1,350 stone steps switchbacking up the hillside to bay views

Getting ashore

The ship berths about 200 meters from the Old Town's Sea Gate, with an underground walkway and escalator avoiding the road, or tenders in when a second ship takes the berth. The walled center is small enough that one day is comfortably enough to see it on foot.

• April to May (spring calls). Typically mild, daytime highs climbing from the mid-teens to around 20°C, greener hills, and a higher chance of a passing shower than in summer.
• June to August (peak summer). Typically hot and dry, highs around 24 to 28°C, long sunny days, and the lowest rainfall of the year. The wall climb is exposed and gets fierce by midday.
• September to October (autumn calls). Typically warm easing to mild, highs around 24°C in September dropping toward the high teens in October, with rainfall building as autumn sets in.
