Little Bay is the emerging capital district on the north coast of Montserrat, the British territory whose southern half, including the original capital Plymouth, was buried by the Soufriere Hills volcano starting in 1995. The volcano still anchors a day here: you can see the ashen ghost town and the steaming dome from designated safe viewpoints while the north stays green and inhabited. What to do on a day in Little Bay

• Montserrat Volcano Observatory, reachable by taxi from the ferry terminal, for a clear safe view of the Soufriere Hills dome and the exclusion zone, plus the monitoring exhibits
• Jack Boy Hill viewpoint, a designated overlook toward the destroyed eastern villages and the former airport that the eruptions buried
• Plymouth and the southern exclusion zone, a modern Pompeii of ash-buried buildings, accessible only with a permitted guided tour, not on your own
• Rendezvous Bay, one of the island's few white-sand beaches, a quiet north-coast cove reached by boat or a hike from Little Bay
• Little Bay itself, the palm-lined harbor area that is being developed as the replacement capital, with local shops and casual eateries

Weather and when to visit

• Dry season (December to April). Typically the cooler, drier window that locals call Creole Lent, with highs around 28 to 30 Celsius, lows near 21 to 24, and February usually the driest month. This is when most cruise calls land.
• Shoulder (May to June). Typically hot and humid with rainfall picking up as the wet season approaches. Daytime highs sit around 30 to 31 Celsius.
