Spanish Town is the small main settlement on Virgin Gorda, but the reason the day exists is a few miles south of it: The Baths, a stretch of coast where house-size granite boulders pile into grottoes, ladders, and tidal pools you wade through to reach Devil's Bay. The town itself, also called The Valley, is low-key, with the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour as its hub. You come here for the geology and the swimming, not for streets to wander.

What to do on a day in Spanish Town (Virgin Gorda)

  • The Baths: a boulder maze you navigate by wooden ladders, ropes, and stairways, ducking through sea-filled caves to come out at the beach
  • Devil's Bay: the white-sand cove at the far end of The Baths trail, reachable either through the boulders or by the easier direct path
  • Spring Bay: a quieter sandy beach just north of The Baths with its own scattered boulders, usually far less crowded
  • Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour at Spanish Town: shops, cafes, and a tourist desk right where the tender lands, useful for a drink before or after the boulders
  • Top of the Baths or Poinciana area above the trailhead: shaded vantage points and a pool overlooking the Sir Francis Drake Channel

Getting ashore

Ships anchor off St Thomas Bay and tender into the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour in the middle of Spanish Town, which has restrooms, taxis, and a tourist desk. The Baths sit about two miles south, a short taxi or open safari-bus ride; one day is plenty to do The Baths and a beach, but go straight to the boulders early because they get tight and crowded by midday.

Weather and when to visit

  • November-December (typical Caribbean cruise calls). Warm and humid, daytime highs typically around 28-29C and nights near 22-23C. This is the tail of the wet season, so short showers are common (November is among the rainier months) but rarely last; sea temperature stays warm around 27-28C, good for swimming.
