Cayo Levantado is a small palm-covered island in Samana Bay off the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic, nicknamed Bacardi Island after a rum commercial filmed here, with white sand and warm sheltered water. Getting ashore

There is no pier; you reach Cayo Levantado only by tender or local boat from the Samana waterfront, a short crossing into the bay. One day is enough and then some, the island is small and beach-focused, so plan it as a swim-and-relax day rather than a place to fill many hours, and expect the western beach to crowd between late morning and mid-afternoon.

Weather and when to visit

• January to March (Caribbean winter and whale season). Typically the drier, more reliable stretch with daytime highs around 82 to 84F and calm bay water; humpback whales are present in the bay through this window, which is the reason to come now.
• December and April (shoulder of the dry season). Typically warm and mostly settled, highs in the low 80s, with the chance of brief showers rising toward the edges of the season. Sea stays warm year-round for swimming.
