Puerto Plata is the Dominican Republic's north-coast amber capital, a town of faded Victorian gingerbread houses sitting under the green wall of Mount Isabel de Torres. The draws are a 16th-century Spanish fort guarding the harbor, a cable car to a mountaintop with a Christ statue and gardens, and a restored historic center of pastel facades. Which terminal your ship uses decides whether the town is a walk or a short ride away.

What to do on a day in Puerto Plata

  • Fortaleza San Felipe, the 16th-century Spanish fort on a headland at the harbor mouth, built against pirate raids, with grounds you can walk for coastal views and a small museum inside
  • Teleferico cable car to Mount Isabel de Torres, climbing to about 2,600 feet for panoramic coast views, botanical gardens, and a replica of Rio's Christ the Redeemer at the summit
  • Victorian historic center around Parque Central, with restored gingerbread architecture and the white Cathedral of San Felipe Apostol
  • Amber Museum, set in a Victorian mansion, showing Dominican amber including a famous mosquito-in-amber specimen
  • Calle del Sombrilla (Umbrella Street) and the pink Paseo de Dona Blanca, two short colorful pedestrian lanes in the center lined with cafes and shops

Getting ashore

Two different terminals serve Puerto Plata: Taino Bay sits downtown with the fort, historic center, and umbrella streets about a 10 minute walk away, while Amber Cove is a private resort-style port roughly 10 miles west in Maimon Bay that requires a taxi (about 20 to 30 minutes) to reach the town. Confirm which one your ship uses, since it determines whether one day in town is a walk or a transfer; either way a single day covers the fort, the cable car, and the center.

Weather and when to visit

  • December to February (peak Caribbean cruise season). Typically warm and humid, highs around 28 C (84 F) with sea around 26 C (78 F); December is the wettest of these and rain tends to come in short tropical bursts.
  • March to April (spring). Typically warm, humid, and drier than midwinter, highs near 28 to 29 C (84 F); the most reliable stretch for the cable car ride to a clear summit.
