Motril is a working port on Spain's Costa Tropical, and almost nobody sails here for the town itself. It is the sea gate to Granada, which puts the Alhambra, the high point of Moorish architecture in Europe, within reach of a single day ashore. The closer payoff, if you skip the long haul inland, is the white hill village of Salobrena and its castle just up the coast.

What to do on a day in Motril

  • The Alhambra in Granada: the Nasrid palaces, the Generalife gardens, and the Alcazaba fortress, the reason most people get off the ship here. Timed palace tickets sell out weeks ahead, so book before you sail
  • Granada's Albaicin, the medieval Moorish quarter of cobbled lanes climbing to the Mirador San Nicolas, which frames the Alhambra against the Sierra Nevada
  • Salobrena, a whitewashed village under a Moorish castle about 10 km up the coast, a short taxi ride and a steep but quick climb to the keep and sea views
  • The Cuevas de Nerja, a vast cave system of stalactite chambers about a 30 to 40 minute drive west along the coast
  • Almunecar's seafront and the hilltop Castillo de San Miguel, another Costa Tropical option that skips the inland drive

Getting ashore

Ships berth in a commercial port roughly 2 km from Motril town, and the walk in is through port industry rather than anything scenic, so plan on a shuttle or taxi. One day is enough for Granada but only just, since the drive runs about 65 to 70 km and 60 to 75 minutes each way and the Alhambra needs a timed entry, so it is a full, tightly run day.

Weather and when to visit

  • April to October (the cruise season on this coast). Mediterranean and reliably dry through the warm months. Spring and autumn calls (April-May, September-October) typically bring comfortable 20 to 27°C days, while midsummer pushes into the high 20s and 30s. Rain is rare from late spring through early autumn. Note that Granada, inland and at altitude, runs hotter in summer and cooler than the coast in shoulder season.
