Willemstad is the capital of Curacao, a UNESCO-listed Dutch colonial harbor town where pastel waterfront houses line the Handelskade and a pontoon bridge swings open across the channel for passing ships. The whole historic center sits within a flat 10-minute walk of the cruise berth, which is why one day here is mostly about walking, not transfers. It earns the day because the architecture, the swinging bridge, and the floating market are all genuinely concentrated and genuinely old, not a manufactured port plaza.
What to do on a day in Willemstad
- Queen Emma Bridge, the floating pontoon footbridge that swings open for ship traffic; if it opens while you are crossing, a free passenger ferry shuttles you across instead
- Handelskade, the row of pastel Dutch colonial merchant houses along the Punda waterfront, best photographed from the Otrobanda side in morning light
- Floating Market on the Sha Caprileskade, where Venezuelan boats sell fruit, vegetables and fish off their decks
- Fort Amsterdam, the 17th-century fort housing the Governor's Palace and Fort Church, at the Punda entrance to the harbor
- Kura Hulanda Museum in Otrobanda, one of the more substantial museums anywhere on the trans-Atlantic slave trade, set in a restored 18th-century complex
- Rif Fort, a restored fortress at the harbor mouth now holding shops and restaurants, a few minutes from the pier
Getting ashore
Ships use either the Mega Pier (larger vessels that cannot clear the Queen Juliana Bridge) or the Mathey Wharf cruise terminal closer in; both put you a flat 5 to 15 minute walk from the Queen Emma Bridge and the Handelskade. One day is plenty to cover Punda and Otrobanda on foot, with time left for a beach taxi if you want one.

Weather and when to visit
- December to February (Caribbean winter season). Typically hot and dry, daytime highs around 86 to 88F with sea around 80 to 82F, only 2 to 3 rainy days a month. Curacao sits south of the hurricane belt, so this is reliable, breezy weather.
- March to May. Typically the driest stretch of the year, sunny and warm with under an inch of rain a month and steady trade winds. Bring sun protection; the island is arid with little shade on the waterfront.
