Al Wajh is a historic Red Sea coral-stone town in Saudi Arabia's Tabuk province, and the call exists almost entirely as the sea gateway to AlUla and Hegra inland. Cruise Saudi has positioned it as the closest port to AlUla, so most travelers spend the day on a long bus run to the desert rather than in the town. Whether the day earns its keep depends on committing to that inland drive.

What to do on a day in Al Wajh (Al-Ula)

• Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, with more than 100 Nabataean tombs carved into sandstone cliffs from the first century AD, the anchor of any visit

Getting ashore

Al Wajh is a tender port; the ship anchors offshore and tenders run to a commercial dock about 5 km from town. AlUla and Hegra are roughly a 2 to 2.5 hour bus ride inland each way, so the AlUla day is effectively the whole day and there is little slack for the town as well.

Weather and when to visit

• November to March (the cruise season here). This is when ships call. Inland AlUla runs mild and pleasant by day, roughly the low 60s to mid 70s F, with cold, sometimes near-freezing desert nights and gentle breezes. The coast at Al Wajh is a touch warmer.
• Summer (not a cruise window). AlUla can climb past 110 F, which is why the season is built around winter. Mentioned only as context for why ships avoid it.
