Jeddah is the Red Sea's historic gateway to Mecca, and its draw is Al-Balad, the UNESCO-listed old town of coral-stone merchant houses with carved wooden lattice balconies. After decades closed to leisure travelers, Saudi Arabia opened to tourism only recently, so arriving by ship still feels like early access. The day splits between the centuries-old souks of Al-Balad and the modern Red Sea corniche.

What to do on a day in Jeddah

• Al-Balad, the UNESCO-listed historic district of coral-stone houses, carved roshan balconies and narrow lanes, founded in the 7th century
• Naseef House, the restored coral mansion of a leading trading family that once hosted the king, one of the best-preserved buildings in the old town
• Souq Al-Alawi, the kingdom's most extensive traditional market, threading off Al-Dahab Street with spice, oud perfume and gold sellers
• Al-Rahma Mosque, the white Floating Mosque built on pillars over the Red Sea so it appears to hover at high tide, on the corniche north of the center
• King Fahd Fountain, which jets seawater higher than any fountain on earth and is lit at dusk along the corniche
• Bab Makkah, the rebuilt historic gate marking the old northern entrance to Al-Balad

Getting ashore

Ships berth at the Jeddah Islamic Port, an active industrial and container harbor where walking out of the gates is not allowed, and the city center is roughly 10 km away. You will need the ship's transfer or an arranged car, so build the day around a tour or a pre-booked driver rather than expecting to stroll off independently.

Weather and when to visit

• November to December (early season). Typical daytime highs around the low 30s Celsius easing through the period, warm and humid by the water. November carries what little rain Jeddah gets, usually brief.
• January to February (peak winter). The most comfortable window, typical highs near 29 Celsius with overnight lows around 20 Celsius. Mostly dry and sunny, ideal for walking Al-Balad before midday.
• March (late season). Warming quickly back toward the low 30s Celsius and turning more humid, a sign the comfortable season is closing.
