What to do on a day in Heraklion (Crete)

• Knossos Palace, the reconstructed Minoan complex with its throne room and frescoes, reached by Bus #2 from the port stop in 20 to 30 minutes
• Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which holds the actual Minoan finds (Phaistos Disc, bull-leaping frescoes) and pairs logically with a Knossos visit, about 15 minutes on foot from the terminal
• Koules Fortress (Rocca al Mare) guarding the Venetian harbour, with rooftop views over the port
• Lion Square (Plateia Venizelou) and the Morosini Fountain, the cafe-lined heart of the old town
• The Venetian Loggia, free to enter, on the main pedestrian spine toward the museum

Getting ashore

Ships drop you at the Port Passenger Station, roughly 700 m and a flat 15-minute walk from the Venetian harbour and old town. One day is enough to do Knossos plus the Archaeological Museum if you go straight to the site in the morning and save the walkable old town for the afternoon.

Weather and when to visit

• April to May (spring shoulder). Typically mild, daytime averages around 16 to 20 C, with sunshine increasing and rain tapering off; comfortable for the Knossos walk without summer heat.
• June to September (peak). Typically hot and dry, daytime highs often 28 to 35 C with near-zero rainfall and long sun; Knossos has little shade, so an early start matters.
• October (autumn shoulder). Typically warm, averages near 21 C, but the first real rains of the season return as the tourist infrastructure begins winding down.
