Muscat is Oman's low-rise capital, a string of white buildings pinned between the bare Hajar mountains and the Gulf of Oman. The port sits directly in front of Mutrah, the old harbor district whose corniche, fort, and centuries-old souk are the easiest reach from the ship. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, 25 km west, is the other anchor of a day here.

What to do on a day in Muscat

• Mutrah Souq, one of the oldest markets in the Arab world, for frankincense, silver, and khanjar daggers in a covered labyrinth
• Mutrah Fort, a roughly 20 minute walk and short climb from the shuttle drop for a panorama over the harbor and old town
• Mutrah Corniche, the white-building waterfront promenade backed by the Hajar mountains
• Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, 25 km west, known for its single hand-woven prayer-hall carpet and giant chandelier
• Old Muscat with the Royal Palace (Qasr Al Alam) flanked by the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, plus the Bait Al Zubair museum
• Mutrah fish market, a five minute walk from the shuttle stop to watch the morning catch come in

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Port Sultan Qaboos (berths 4 and 5) in the working port, where walking out on your own is not permitted; a shuttle runs the roughly 2 km to the Mutrah corniche and souk. From there Mutrah is walkable, but the mosque, Old Muscat, and the Opera House each need a taxi, and one day covers Mutrah plus one of those.

• March (late season). Typically warming back up, highs near 31C by day and around 21C at night, still dry
