Sur is Oman's old dhow-building port on the Gulf of Oman, the town that for centuries sent wooden trading ships to East Africa and India. It is one of the last places in Arabia where craftsmen still hand-build the curved-hull dhows by traditional methods, and the lagoon, forts, and white lighthouse village across the water give the call a genuine maritime feel rather than a manufactured one.

What to do on a day in Sur

• See the working dhow yard near the Khor Al Batah suspension bridge, where shipwrights still build wooden vessels by hand using centuries-old techniques
• Visit the Sur Maritime Museum for the history of the town's ocean trade and its old vessels
• Cross to the fishing village of Al Ayjah and its white lighthouse, about 15 minutes around the lagoon, for the classic view back across the water to Sur
• Walk the corniche along the lagoon, lined with cafes and looking out on the moored dhows
• See Sunaysilah Castle, the inland fort above town, which is the one of Sur's castles that reliably opens on weekdays

Getting ashore

Sur has no cruise berth, only a small fishing harbour, so ships anchor offshore and tender passengers in. The town core, dhow yard, museum, and corniche are close together and walkable or a short taxi ride; one day covers the town comfortably.

Weather and when to visit

• November to March (the winter cruise season when ships call). Mild and dry, typically daytime temperatures in the 20s C / 70s to low 80s F, the pleasant window for walking. Early November can still carry a small Arabian Sea cyclone risk on this coast.
