Khasab sits at the tip of the Musandam Peninsula, an Omani exclave of sheer ochre cliffs dropping into the Strait of Hormuz, the reason it gets called the Norway of Arabia. The day earns itself on the water rather than in town: a traditional wooden dhow threading the fjord-like khors, with common dolphins riding the bow and a calm anchorage for a swim.

What to do on a day in Khasab

• Half or full-day dhow cruise into the Musandam khors, the signature outing, with stops for swimming and snorkeling
• Telegraph Island, a small islet in a fjord that held a 19th-century British telegraph relay station, the standard dhow anchorage and snorkel stop

Getting ashore

Ships tie up at Khasab Port, a small terminal with taxis and the dhow harbor close at hand; the town center is about 2km away and walkable in cool weather. One day is enough, and you should spend most of it on a dhow rather than in town.

Weather and when to visit

• November. Typically warm and dry, highs around 30C, water about 22-25C, comfortable for the dhow and a swim stop.
• December to February. The pleasant core of the calling season, highs around 20-25C, cooler mornings near 17C, occasional modest rain in December and January, sea around 22-25C.
• March to April. Warming again, comfortable early but climbing toward the hot season; March can bring brief showers.
