Doha is Qatar's capital, a fast-built Gulf city where I.M. Pei's Museum of Islamic Art and Jean Nouvel's desert-rose National Museum bookend a restored heritage market. The cruise terminal sits right on the Corniche in the revamped Mina District, which makes this one of the more walkable Gulf calls. You come ashore for a tight cluster of serious architecture and a living souq, most of it close to the ship.

What to do on a day in Doha

• Museum of Islamic Art, I.M. Pei's limestone landmark on its own promontory, holding over a thousand years of Islamic art with skyline views from its park
• Souq Waqif, a restored warren of lanes selling spices, textiles, and crafts with courtyard cafes, a 5 to 10 minute drive from the port
• National Museum of Qatar, Jean Nouvel's interlocking-disc 'desert rose' building tracing Qatar's history
• The Mina District at the old port, walkable from the terminal, with pastel buildings, a marina, and a fish market
• The Doha Corniche, a 7-kilometer waterfront promenade for a walk with skyline and dhow-harbor views

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the Grand Cruise Terminal in the Mina District directly on the Corniche, so the Mina neighborhood and parts of the Corniche are reachable on foot. Souq Waqif and the two big museums are a short taxi, shuttle, or metro hop away, and one day is enough to do the Museum of Islamic Art, the souq, and a Corniche walk without rushing.

Weather and when to visit

• Nov to Mar (winter cruise season). Mild and mostly sunny, with daytime highs around 22 to 26C and cooler evenings. December through February can bring occasional cloud and brief rain, and winter humidity runs higher than in summer though temperatures stay comfortable.
• Apr (shoulder). Noticeably warmer as summer approaches, with highs pushing toward 30C and above and lower humidity, so midday outdoor time grows hotter.
