Safaga is a working Red Sea cargo and phosphate port with little to see in the town itself; its entire reason for being on the itinerary is as the gateway to Luxor, roughly three hours inland across the desert. Luxor is ancient Thebes, the richest concentration of pharaonic monuments anywhere, with the temple complexes on the east bank and the royal tombs on the west. The day is a long excursion to one of the great archaeological landscapes on earth, not a port wander.

What to do on a day in Safaga (Luxor)

• Karnak Temple on the Nile's east bank, the vast Amun precinct and its forest of giant columns in the Great Hypostyle Hall
• Valley of the Kings on the west bank, the rock-cut tombs of New Kingdom pharaohs including Tutankhamun
• Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, the terraced temple set against the cliffs
• The Colossi of Memnon, the two seated statues of Amenhotep III on the west bank
• Luxor Temple, the riverside temple in the heart of the modern city, often added on longer day plans

Getting ashore

Ships berth at the commercial port of Safaga; there is essentially nothing to do in the immediate area, so plan on a full-day organized excursion. Luxor is about 220 to 250 km and close to three hours' drive each way, making for a long day of roughly nine or more hours with short stops at each site, so an early start and a guided tour with port pickup are the sensible way to do it.

Weather and when to visit

• December to February. The mild winter cruise window, typically warm sunny days in Luxor and cool desert nights, the most comfortable time for the long inland day
• March to April. Warming steadily, still pleasant by day but the desert drive and open tomb sites grow noticeably hotter toward late spring
