Arrecife is the working capital of Lanzarote, the easternmost of the main Canary Islands, and the gateway to a volcanic landscape unlike anywhere else in Europe. The town itself is flat and walkable around a saltwater lagoon, but the day is really about the island beyond it: the lava fields of Timanfaya and the cave-and-art sites the artist César Manrique built into the rock. One day covers the headline volcanic sights with a transfer.
What to do on a day in Arrecife (Lanzarote)
- Timanfaya National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere of rust and black lava fields from the 1730 to 1736 eruptions, about 35 minutes (29 km) from the port, with a bus route through the cones and a geothermal demonstration
- Jameos del Agua, César Manrique's concert hall and lagoon built inside a collapsed lava tube, roughly 30 minutes from the port
- Cueva de los Verdes, part of the same lava tube system and one of the longest in the world, a short walk from Jameos del Agua
- El Charco de San Ginés, the saltwater lagoon ringed by whitewashed fishermen's houses in the center of Arrecife, an easy walk if you dock at the Naos pier
- Castillo de San José, a clifftop fortress now holding the island's modern art museum, with Castillo de San Gabriel guarding the lagoon mouth in town
Getting ashore
Two berths are in use: Puerto Naos puts the town center 15 to 20 minutes on foot, while the commercial Puerto de los Mármoles sits 3 to 4 km out with little shade, where a shuttle or taxi beats walking. The island is small, so one day is enough to reach Timanfaya plus one Manrique cave site, or to walk the town if you stay put.

Weather and when to visit
- November to February. Mild and dry, typical highs around 20 to 22C, cooler and sharper than summer. Clear winter mornings give the best visibility over the Timanfaya lava fields; the lava-tube caves hold near 18C year round.
- March to April. Warming into the low-to-mid 20sC with reliably low rain, comfortable for sustained walking over volcanic terrain.
