Santa Cruz is the capital of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, a working Spanish city under a volcanic skyline rather than a beach resort, with a walkable old center and Calatrava's wave-shaped Auditorio on the waterfront. The center begins a few hundred meters from the berth, so the day is about a real Spanish city plus, if you want it, a drive up to Teide. It earns the day for the mix of subtropical climate, genuine local life, and easy on-foot access.

What to do on a day in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

  • Plaza de Espana and the adjoining Plaza de la Candelaria, the main squares with a large artificial lake and fountain, about 450 meters from the terminal
  • Auditorio de Tenerife, Santiago Calatrava's sweeping white concert hall on the seafront, roughly a 20-minute walk south along the water
  • Iglesia de la Concepcion, the historic parish church with the city's landmark bell tower in the old quarter
  • Mercado de Nuestra Senora de Africa (La Recova), the covered market for Canarian produce, cheese, and fish
  • Parque Garcia Sanabria, a shaded city park full of tropical and subtropical plantings, a short walk inland
  • Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA), strong on Guanche history and the islands' natural history, near the center

Getting ashore

Most ships tie up at Muelle Sur, a long breakwater; from the berth it is roughly three-quarters of a mile to a mile to the terminal building, with a free port shuttle, then about 450 meters more to Plaza de Espana. One day covers the old center comfortably on foot, but if Mount Teide is the goal you will spend most of the day on the road up and back.

Weather and when to visit

  • November to March (winter and Canary repositioning season). Typically mild and mostly dry, daytime highs around 68 to 70F, the year's only meaningful rain falls in this window but stays light. Comfortable for walking, cooler than the Caribbean.
  • April to October (spring and summer season). Typically warm, dry and breezy, highs in the high 70s, very little rain, with the warmest sea around September. Sun is strong even when the air feels temperate.
