Djúpivogur is a tiny fishing village on a fjord in remote East Iceland, the kind of stop that earns its day through stillness, an unusual public artwork, and a pyramid-shaped mountain over the harbor rather than through a list of sights. Nearly everything in the village sits within a short walk of where the tenders land. It is also the gateway, by long road excursion, to Vatnajökull and Iceland's glacier-lagoon country to the south.

What to do on a day in Djúpivogur

• Eggin í Gleðivík (the Eggs of Merry Bay), 34 granite eggs along the shoreline, each a different local bird's egg scaled up, about a 10-minute walk from the dock
• Langabúð, an 18th-century log warehouse on the harbor now holding the village folk museum and a café, the most convenient stop off the ship
• Búlandstindur, the pyramid-shaped peak over the fjord that dominates every view from the village
• Coastal and nature trails around the village for fjord and ocean views with very little company
• Papey island boat trips offshore to a puffin and seabird colony, seasonal in the breeding months
• Vatnajökull glacier-lagoon excursion to the south, a long but spectacular full-day drive for those who book it

Getting ashore

Smaller ships berth at Gleðivík pier and larger ones anchor in the fjord and tender ashore (the gangway can be steep). The village core, including the Eggs, Langabúð, and the harbor, is walkable in well under an hour, so one day is ample for Djúpivogur itself; the glacier lagoon to the south is a long drive that consumes the whole call.

Weather and when to visit

• June to August (Iceland cruise season). Cool and changeable, typical highs around 11 to 14C, with the Gulf Stream keeping it mild for the latitude. Expect sun, cloud, wind, and rain in a single day and pack a waterproof, windproof layer even in midsummer. Daylight is very long, with around 16 hours in August.
