Korčula is a walled medieval town on its own Dalmatian island, a tight grid of stone lanes laid out in a herringbone pattern to channel sea breezes, often called a smaller Dubrovnik. It earns the day on compactness alone: a fortified Old Town you can read in a few hours, the Marco Polo birthplace claim, and white wines grown just down the island.

What to do on a day in Korčula

• Climb the bell tower of St. Mark's Cathedral, the Venetian-Gothic church at the centre of the Old Town, for a view over the rooftops and the channel
• Visit the Marco Polo House and tower, the disputed but locally cherished birthplace, and climb it for views over the peninsula
• Walk the town walls and through the Revelin Tower land gate, the grand stepped entrance into the Old Town
• See the Town Museum on the main square for the island's stone-cutting and seafaring history
• Catch the Moreska sword dance, the centuries-old folk performance staged on summer evenings (typically Mondays and Thursdays in July and August, Thursdays in June and September)

• May to June (early season). Typically warm and largely dry, highs climbing from the low 20s C into the mid 20s C by June, sea warming toward 22C, long sunny days.
• July to August (peak season). Typically hot and dry, highs in the high 20s to low 30s C, warm sea, and strong midday sun, with shade in the lanes a relief.
• September to October (shoulder season). Typically warm and pleasant easing to mild, highs from the mid 20s C dropping toward the high teens by late October, sea still around 23C in September, with the year's wetter spells returning in October.
