Civitavecchia is Rome's deepwater port, a working harbor about 80 km northwest of the capital, and for most travelers it is the gateway rather than the destination. The day is really about Rome, where the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and the Vatican sit within a navigable core, though the town itself holds a genuine Renaissance fortress if you choose to stay close to the ship.

What to do on a day in Civitavecchia (Rome)

  • The Colosseum and the adjacent Roman Forum, the political and commercial heart of ancient Rome, reachable from the Roma Ostiense train stop (book the Colosseum ahead, it sells out weeks out)
  • St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums, off the Roma San Pietro stop (the Vatican Museums are among the hardest tickets in Europe, reserve well in advance)
  • The Pantheon, the best-preserved monument of ancient Rome, and a short walk on to Piazza Navona
  • The Trevi Fountain, the baroque fountain in the centro storico, walkable from the Pantheon
  • Forte Michelangelo, the quadrilateral Renaissance fortress on Civitavecchia's own harbor, commissioned by Pope Julius II and designed in part by Bramante, a short walk from the pier if you skip Rome
  • The National Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia, a few steps from the fort, for those staying in town

Getting ashore

Ships berth at one of several docks in the harbor; from the berths near Dock 12 it is about a 20-minute flat walk or a short paid shuttle to Civitavecchia station, where the FL5 regional line reaches Rome in roughly 45 to 60 minutes and stops near the Vatican, Trastevere, and the Colosseum. One day lets you see Rome's highlights only if you pick a focus and pre-book the headline sights; trying to do both the Vatican and ancient Rome in a single day is a stretch.
