Mahon sits at the head of one of the longest natural deep-water harbors in the world, and ships sail several kilometers up that inlet to reach the town, which is the approach itself worth being on deck for. The Georgian-tinged old town above the quay reflects an 18th-century British occupation, and it is small and walkable. This is the quieter, less-trafficked Balearic call, a working island capital rather than a party island.

What to do on a day in Mahón (Menorca)

• Xoriguer gin distillery and its harborside Botiga, a five-minute walk from the pier, where the island's juniper gin is sampled and sold
• Plaça de la Conquesta and the nearby arch framing a view over Mahon bay, one of the most photographed spots on Menorca
• Church of Santa Maria with its 18th-century organ of more than 3,000 pipes, which hosts midday recitals
• Museum of Menorca, set in a former Franciscan monastery, tracing the island from prehistory through the British era
• Mercat des Peix and the Claustre del Carme market for local Mahon cheese and tapas

Getting ashore

The cruise quay is about 1.2 km from the town center, a roughly 15 minute walk along the harbor, or you can take the shuttle. From the waterfront, stone steps climb to the old town, or a small public lift saves the steep 30-meter rise for a few cents. The old town is compact and very walkable, so one day is comfortable to see the center on foot with time for the harbor promenade.

• May to June. Warm and pleasant, daytime highs from the low 20s C in May (around 70F) up to the high 20s by June, good for walking with mild evenings.
• September to October. Still warm, highs in the mid-20s C (mid-70s F) with the sea at its warmest in early autumn, and rain chances increasing through October.
