La Goulette is the port town at the mouth of the Lake of Tunis, and it is the gateway to ancient Carthage, the medina of Tunis, and the blue-and-white cliff village of Sidi Bou Said. The port itself is functional rather than a destination; the day is about what lies a short drive away. The three headline sites sit within a compact coastal arc north of the harbor, which is why a single full day can reasonably take in all of them.

What to do on a day in La Goulette (Tunis)

  • Carthage, the UNESCO-listed Punic and Roman ruins about 8 to 10 km from the port, including the Baths of Antoninus overlooking the sea and the Byrsa Hill
  • Sidi Bou Said, the cliffside village of whitewashed houses with cobalt-blue doors and shutters, a short drive up the coast from Carthage
  • Medina of Tunis, a UNESCO World Heritage old city of souks, the Zitouna Mosque quarter, and covered lanes
  • Bardo Museum's Roman mosaic collection, often paired with Carthage on guided tours when time allows

Getting ashore

Ships dock at the La Goulette cruise terminal; Tunis is roughly 12 km away (about 12 to 15 minutes by taxi) and Carthage is 8 to 10 km up the coast. A TGM light-rail station sits about 1 km from the port but is poorly signed and not built for visitors, so most travelers take a taxi or an organized transfer. One day is enough to combine Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, and the medina only with an early start and a driver or tour handling the logistics.

Weather and when to visit

  • April to early June. Mild and mostly dry, daytime highs in the low 20s C (around 70F), comfortable for walking the ruins and the medina.
  • June to August. Hot and dry, regularly 30 to 35C (86 to 95F) and occasionally higher, so open sites like Carthage are best done early; carry water and sun cover.
  • September to October. Warm and settled, highs in the mid-20s C (mid-70s F), low rainfall and mostly sunny, generally the easiest conditions for a full touring day.
