Amalfi is the namesake town of the Amalfi Coast, a former maritime republic wedged into a ravine where the mountains drop straight to the Gulf of Salerno. It earns the day with a striped Arab-Norman cathedral rising over the main square, a warren of stepped lanes selling limoncello and handmade paper, and ferry access along one of the most dramatic coastlines in Italy.

What to do on a day in Amalfi

• Climb the broad staircase to the Duomo di Sant'Andrea, the 9th-century cathedral with a striped facade and bronze doors cast in Constantinople
• Step into the Chiostro del Paradiso, the cathedral's cloister of interlaced Moorish arches
• Wander Piazza del Duomo and the stepped medieval lanes behind it for limoncello and handmade Amalfi paper
• Visit the Museo della Carta (Paper Museum), housed in a medieval paper mill up the valley
• Walk about 15 minutes through the cliffside tunnel or path to neighboring Atrani, a quieter village around the headland
• Take a ferry along the coast to Positano for the vertical-village views from the water

Getting ashore

Amalfi is a tender port: ships anchor in the Gulf of Salerno and shuttle passengers to the Marina Coppola pier right at the edge of town, with Piazza del Duomo about a one-minute walk away. The town is compact and entirely walkable. One day is enough for Amalfi town and a short walk to Atrani, but reaching Positano or Ravello eats much of the day in transfers.

Weather and when to visit

• May, June and September (shoulder season). Typical highs around 21 to 25C, warm and largely sunny with manageable crowds, widely considered the most comfortable window for walking the steps and lanes.
• July and August (peak summer). Hot and dry with typical highs often above 30C, the busiest and warmest stretch, and the driest months of the year with very little rain.
• October (late shoulder). Typical highs near 21C, mild with thinning crowds, though rainfall increases and brief showers become more likely.
