Ibiza's reputation is nightlife, but the cruise call is about Dalt Vila, the walled UNESCO old town climbing from the harbor to a 14th-century cathedral. Inside the Renaissance ramparts are cobbled lanes, bastions with harbor views, and galleries rather than clubs. The historic core is compact and walkable once you are at its base, so a day here is a town visit, not a beach-resort transfer.

What to do on a day in Ibiza

• Portal de ses Taules, the main gate into Dalt Vila, flanked by Roman-era statuary
• Bastion of Santa Llucia, a rampart point with panoramic views across the harbor
• Ibiza Cathedral at the summit, blending 14th-century Gothic and 18th-century Baroque
• Church of Santo Domingo, a 16th-century Baroque church on the walk up
• La Marina and the Mercat Vell area just outside the walls, with the old market and waterfront cafes
• Talamanca or Figueretes beaches, a 10 to 15 minute walk from the old town if you want sand in the afternoon

Getting ashore

Most ships dock at Botafoc pier, about 3 km from the old town. Walking the harbor road takes 35 to 40 minutes with little shade; the easier moves are the cruise-line shuttle or a city boat that runs roughly every 15 minutes from a jetty about 200 meters from the terminal, plus taxis at the rank. One day is plenty for Dalt Vila; allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the climb through the walled town, which involves cobbles and several hundred steps to the cathedral.

Weather and when to visit

• May to June. Warm and largely dry, daytime highs in the mid-20s C (mid to high 70s F), clear sun, and quieter streets than peak summer.
• July to August. Hot, often above 30C (86F), with strong midday sun on the unshaded climb through Dalt Vila; start early and carry water.
• September to October. Still warm and the sea at its warmest, highs around the mid to high 20s C in September easing through October, when the odd windy or rainy day appears.
