Sorrento sits on a cliff above the Bay of Naples, a walkable old town of lemon groves, ceramic shops, and terraces facing Vesuvius across the water. It earns the day both for the town itself and for being the launch point: hydrofoils to Capri and the road to Pompeii both leave from steps off the tender pier.

What to do on a day in Sorrento

• Villa Comunale, the cliff-top public garden right at the top of the Marina Piccola lift, with open views over the bay and Vesuvius and no entry fee
• Piazza Tasso, the central square and social hub, about six minutes from the top of the lift
• Via San Cesareo, the main pedestrian shopping lane packed with ceramics, limoncello, and trattorias
• Sorrento Cathedral and the medieval Cloister of San Francesco, a quiet courtyard that hosts exhibitions and concerts
• A hydrofoil to Capri from Marina Piccola, about 25 minutes each way, with the ticket booth steps from the tender drop
• Marina Grande, the older fishing harbor below town, for seafood lunch away from the main square

Getting ashore

Ships anchor offshore and tender into Marina Piccola. From the pier, walk a few minutes right along the shore to a cliff lift that reaches Villa Comunale in about 20 seconds, or take the 20-minute uphill walk of roughly 200 steps. One day is enough for the town easily, or for one focused trip to Capri or Pompeii, not both.
