Krabi is Thailand's Andaman Sea coast at its most dramatic: limestone karst towers rising straight out of jade water, beaches you can only reach by boat, and the resort strip of Ao Nang as the jumping-off point. Ships anchor offshore and tender in, so the day is built around getting back on the water to Railay and the islands rather than around a town center. The draw here is scenery and beaches, not streets or monuments.

Getting ashore

Krabi is an anchor-and-tender port: the ship lies offshore and small boats run passengers to the Ao Nang beachfront (Klong Jilad / Chaofa pier is the area's main jetty), with a typical port call giving roughly five to six hours ashore. One day is enough for either Railay or a single island tour, not both, and almost everything worth seeing needs an onward longtail or speedboat from where you land.

Weather and when to visit

• November to March (Andaman dry season, when cruises call). Hot and humid with the calmest, clearest Andaman conditions of the year, highs in the low 30s C. This dry-season window is exactly why itineraries call here, since the sea is settled enough for reliable tendering and island boats. Outside it the southwest monsoon brings rough water and frequent rain.
