Sihanoukville is Cambodia's deep-water port city on the Gulf of Thailand, the gateway to the southern coast and its islands. The town itself is in flux, dominated by casino and port construction, so the day is really about getting out of it: the mangrove estuaries of Ream National Park and the hilltop Wat Leu temple are the realistic rewards. It is a working port stop, not a polished resort call.

What to do on a day in Sihanoukville

  • Ream National Park, a protected coast of mangroves and estuaries about 30 to 45 minutes out, with boat trips along the Prek Toek Sap river and birdlife (egrets, kingfishers, storks)
  • Wat Leu, the hilltop Buddhist temple overlooking the city and coast, with gold statues, traditional architecture, and resident macaques, only 15 to 30 minutes from the port
  • Otres Beach, a long quieter stretch of golden sand with beachfront restaurants, away from the busier central beaches
  • Independence Beach, a calmer swimming beach often used as the picnic stop on Ream-area excursions
  • Phsar Leu market, the chaotic central produce-and-goods market for a real-life-Cambodia hour

Getting ashore

Ships berth alongside at the industrial Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, roughly 2 to 5 km from the town, surrounded by container yards and active construction. You cannot walk out: it is a heavy-truck zone with no sidewalks, so a cruise shuttle, taxi, or negotiated tuk-tuk is mandatory, and you should settle the fare at the gate. One day suits a single mission (Ream or Wat Leu plus a beach); skip any thought of Phnom Penh or Angkor.

Weather and when to visit

  • December to January. The coolest and driest, peak-season window. Daily highs around 31-32C, lows near 20-22C, calm seas, and clear water. January is the single least-rainy month with only about four rain days.
  • February to March. Still firmly dry and hot, with February the lowest-rainfall month. Sea temperatures warm (around 28C) and seas calm, good for the offshore-island and estuary boat trips.
