Getting ashore

Most cruise ships anchor and tender passengers to the Maritime Museum and Melaka Marina area, a 10 to 15-minute walk from Dutch Square; the long-delayed deep-water Melaka Gateway terminal sits well outside the center. The historic core is small and one day on foot covers it, but do not come on a Tuesday, when many museums and shops close.

• January to March (drier window). Typically hot and humid, highs around 31 to 32 C; the relatively drier stretch, with February the least wet, though afternoon showers still occur.
• October to December (monsoon). Typically hot with heavy rainfall, November the wettest month around 270 mm; expect sticky humidity and frequent downpours that interrupt walking.
