Getting ashore

Ships dock at Porto Malai, also called the Star Cruises Jetty or Awana pier, at the southern tip of the island next to Resorts World Langkawi, not in central Kuah. Taxis wait at the terminal, with the cable car roughly 40 minutes away and the airport-area attractions a similar haul, so budget transfer time. One day comfortably covers two anchors, for example cable car plus mangroves, but not the whole island.

Weather and when to visit

• November to March (peak, drier season). The reliable window: warm days of 81 to 90 F, lower humidity, and the most sunshine, driven by the northeast monsoon keeping this coast dry.
• April to October (wet season). Hot and humid with the southwest monsoon; downpours are common but often short, lasting two to three hours before clearing, with the heaviest rain August through October.
