Getting ashore

In the November to April dry season ships anchor off Patong Bay and tender passengers ashore near the beach, rather than docking, so factor tender time into your day. There is no port shuttle because the local taxi union blocks it, so arrange a private driver, a metered taxi, a tuk-tuk, or Grab, and negotiate fares first; one day is enough for the temple-and-viewpoint loop plus old town, but not for the far-flung boat trips to Phi Phi.

Weather and when to visit

• Nov to Mar (dry, peak cruise season). Hot and humid with highs around 31 to 32C, mostly sunny skies, and calm seas that make tendering reliable. November can still see lingering monsoon showers early in the month before the dry season fully settles.
• Apr (shoulder). The hottest stretch, with highs near 33C, high humidity, and a rising chance of heavy afternoon showers as the southwest monsoon approaches.
