George Town is a UNESCO-listed old port city where Chinese clan houses, British colonial offices, Indian and Malay quarters, and a famous run of street murals sit shoulder to shoulder in a compact, walkable grid. Ships berth at Swettenham Pier, which lands you at the edge of the heritage zone, so you can be inside the murals and clan-jetty lanes within minutes of the gangway. It is also one of the strongest street-food cities in Asia, which is half the reason to give it a day.

What to do on a day in Penang (Georgetown)

• Fort Cornwallis, the star-shaped 18th-century coastal fort directly outside the cruise terminal, the easiest first stop off the ship
• The Ernest Zacharevic street murals, anchored by 'Little Children on a Bicycle' on Lebuh Armenian (Armenian Street), the wall that put George Town on the global street-art map
• Chew Jetty, the largest of the Clan Jetties: stilt houses and a wooden walkway over the water, a few minutes' walk along Weld Quay from the pier
• Khoo Kongsi, the most ornate Chinese clan temple in the old town, deep in the heritage lanes
• Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (the Blue Mansion), the indigo-blue courtyard house, by guided tour only
• Kek Lok Si Temple and Penang Hill in Air Itam, a roughly 25-minute Grab ride if you want a half-day beyond the old town (the funicular climbs Penang Hill for island views)

Getting ashore

Ships dock at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, in the center of George Town, so you walk straight into the UNESCO heritage zone with no shuttle (Fort Cornwallis is right at the exit, most highlights are a few hundred meters apart). One day covers the old town comfortably on foot; add a Grab ride only if you want Penang Hill or Kek Lok Si as well.

Weather and when to visit

• November to February (typical Asia cruise season). Hot and humid, daytime highs around 30 to 31C, lows near 23 to 25C. This is the drier, more comfortable stretch, though short heavy showers can still arrive in the late afternoon. November is the wettest of these months, December onward generally clearer.
