Kushiro is a working fishing and port city on the misty southeast coast of Hokkaido, and the reason ships call is the country beyond it: Kushiro Shitsugen, Japan's largest marshland, and the red-crowned cranes that nest there. The town itself is a short, pleasant riverside stop centered on a seafood market and a sunset-famous bridge. This is a nature day with a small-city base, not a city day.
What to do on a day in Kushiro
- Washo Market near the train station, where you buy a bowl of rice and build your own katte-don by choosing sashimi from the stalls
- Nusamai Bridge over the Kushiro River, lined with bronze statues and known for its sunset light, about fifteen minutes from the station
- Fisherman's Wharf MOO, the riverfront market and dining complex where the free port shuttle drops
- Kushiro Shitsugen National Park observatories, such as Hosooka and the Kushiro Shitsugen Observatory, for panoramic views over the wetland and its winding rivers
- Akan International Crane Center or Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary to see the red-crowned cranes, reached by Akan Bus from town
- A longer run to Lake Akan, a caldera lake about 90 minutes inland with the largest Ainu kotan village in Hokkaido
Getting ashore
Ships berth at the West Port industrial area roughly 5 km out, where walking is not practical, so the free city shuttle to JR Kushiro Station or Fisherman's Wharf MOO is the way in, about fifteen minutes. The market, bridge, and MOO fill a half day on foot from the station; the marshland observatories and crane sanctuaries need a bus or transfer, so choose town or nature rather than trying to do both in one call.

Weather and when to visit
- Late spring (May to June). Cool and changeable, daytime highs roughly in the 50s to low 60s F, with the famous sea fog starting to build along the coast.
- Summer (July to August), the main cruise window. Markedly cooler and foggier than the rest of Japan, highs around 60 to 72 F. Thick sea fog is frequent, can soften marshland views, and occasionally slows the port shuttle.
