La Coruna is a Galician port city on an Atlantic peninsula, ringed by one of the longest seafront promenades in Europe and crowned by a working Roman lighthouse. The draw is a walkable old town around Plaza de Maria Pita, the glass-galleried houses along the harbor, and serious Galician seafood. It is a comfortable one-day port where the center is close to the ship and the headline sight, the Tower of Hercules, sits a short ride away.

What to do on a day in La Coruña

  • Plaza de Maria Pita, the broad arcaded main square fronting the ornate city hall, named for the woman who rallied the city's defense in 1589
  • The Ciudad Vieja, the old town's quiet stone lanes and small Romanesque churches behind the square
  • The galerias, the rows of white glassed-in balconies along Avenida de la Marina that give the harborfront its nickname, the City of Glass
  • The Tower of Hercules, the oldest Roman lighthouse still in use, about 2.4km from the old town by foot along the seafront or a short bus ride on lines 3 or 5
  • The paseo maritimo, the long coastal promenade that loops much of the peninsula past the lighthouse and the beaches
  • Playa de Riazor and Playa de Orzan, the city's urban beaches a 15 to 20 minute walk from the center

Getting ashore

Ships dock close to the city, roughly 1 to 2km from Plaza de Maria Pita, an easy 5 to 25 minute walk depending on berth, or a short local bus. With 8 to 10 hours you can comfortably combine the Tower of Hercules, the old-town squares, the promenade, and a long seafood lunch.

Weather and when to visit

  • May, June, and September (shoulder cruise months). Mild and changeable Atlantic weather, highs in the high teens to low 20s C, sunnier and drier than winter but with showers always possible.
  • July and August (peak summer calls). The driest and sunniest stretch, highs around 22 to 23C, cool ocean breeze; July is the driest month though Galicia stays greener and wetter than the Mediterranean coast.
