Pauillac is a small town on the Gironde estuary in the heart of the Medoc, and the ship ties up right at the town quay. This is the gateway to the Left Bank's most famous Cabernet Sauvignon, the appellation that holds three of the five Premier Cru estates. The town itself is a brief stroll; the day is really about the vineyards a short drive inland, or a longer run to the city of Bordeaux.

What to do on a day in Pauillac (Bordeaux)

  • The Quai Leon Perrier waterfront where the ship docks, lined with cafes and the marina, walkable end to end in minutes
  • The Maison du Tourisme et du Vin on the quay, the wine house for tastings, maps, and bookings before heading into the vineyards
  • Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Chateau Lafite Rothschild, two of the Premier Cru estates of the Pauillac appellation, a short drive into the vines
  • Chateau Pichon and the classed-growth estates of neighboring Saint-Julien and Saint-Estephe along the D2 wine route
  • Margaux, the appellation further south toward Bordeaux, often paired on a Medoc tasting day
  • The city of Bordeaux itself, about 53km south, for the 18th-century riverfront and the Cite du Vin if you trade the vineyards for the city

Getting ashore

The ship docks at the town quay in central Pauillac, so you step off directly into town; everything beyond the waterfront, meaning the actual chateaux, needs a transfer, with Gare de Pauillac about a 15-minute walk for trains toward Bordeaux. One day forces a choice: the Medoc vineyards close by, or the hour each way to the city of Bordeaux, not both well.

Weather and when to visit

  • April to June (spring, common cruise window). Mild with frequent showers and cool nights, daytime highs typically in the mid-teens to low 20s C; the vineyards are green and budding.
  • July and August (summer). Warm and the sunniest, highs often 28 to 30C, with occasional Atlantic cool spells; the vines are in full leaf.
  • September and October (autumn, harvest). Pleasant in early September then cooler and wetter into October; this is Medoc harvest, with Cabernet Sauvignon typically picked late September into October.
