Leixões is the deepwater port serving Porto, sitting in Matosinhos about 9km north of the old city. The day splits two ways: the working seafood town and beach right at the dock, or Porto itself, with its granite riverfront, tiled stations, and the port-wine lodges across the Douro. The terminal you arrive at is a destination in its own right, a white spiral of ceramic tile by architect Luis Pedro Silva.

What to do on a day in Leixões (Porto)

• Ribeira, Porto's UNESCO-listed riverfront quarter of stacked houses and arcaded lanes along the Douro
• The Dom Luis I Bridge, Eiffel-era double-deck iron span; walk the upper deck for the view back over Ribeira
• Sao Bento railway station, whose entrance hall is lined with roughly 20,000 blue-and-white azulejo tiles depicting Portuguese history
• The port-wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia across the river, where the houses age and taste their port in the cellars
• Livraria Lello and the Clerigos Tower in the university quarter, a short walk apart
• In Matosinhos by the dock: the grilled-fish restaurants of Rua Heroes de Franca and Janet Echelman's floating net sculpture She Changes, locally the anemone

Getting ashore

Ships berth at the Leixoes cruise terminal in Matosinhos, about 9km from central Porto; the simplest route in is the Metro Blue Line A from Matosinhos Sul to Trindade or Sao Bento, roughly 25 to 30 minutes, with bus 500 and taxis as alternatives. One day lets you do Porto's core or stay local in Matosinhos for the beach and seafood, but not both at leisure.

Weather and when to visit

• April to June (spring shoulder, common cruise window). Mild and increasingly dry, highs climbing from the mid-teens C into the low 20s; rain eases steadily through spring, with showers still possible.
• July and August (summer). Warmest and driest, highs around 24 to 26C, very little rain, cool Atlantic breeze and sea fog possible on the coast.
• September and October (autumn shoulder). September stays warm and pleasant near 24C; rain picks up noticeably into October and November as the wet season returns.
