Lerwick is the only town of any size in Shetland, a stone-built fishing and harbor port closer to Bergen than to Edinburgh, where Norse and Scottish history sit side by side. The day works because the flagstoned Commercial Street, a 17th-century fort and a strong regional museum all sit within a few minutes of the waterfront, and the seabird-and-seal coast walk starts at the edge of town. It is compact enough that the center reveals itself on foot without a tour.

What to do on a day in Lerwick (Shetland Islands)

  • Commercial Street, the narrow flagstone main street running along the old waterfront, lined with knitwear shops, cafes and the Lodberries (the waterside merchant houses used in the Shetland TV series)
  • Fort Charlotte, a 17th-century artillery fort with intact walls and cannon overlooking the harbor, free to enter
  • Shetland Museum and Archives at Hay's Dock, covering the islands' Norse, fishing and textile history, free entry
  • Clickimin Broch, a roughly 2,000-year-old Iron Age stone tower beside a loch, a short walk from the center
  • The Knab, a clifftop coastal walk south of town for sea views, seabirds and a chance of seals offshore
  • Fjara Café at the Ness of Sound, about a 20-minute walk, for local plates like reestit mutton and a working harbor view

Getting ashore

Larger ships anchor and tender to Victoria Pier in the heart of town, while ships berthed at Mair's Pier or Holmsgarth 5 use a free shuttle into the center. From the pier the shops, fort, museum and tourist office are all within a few minutes on foot, and one day easily covers the town with time for the coast path.

Weather and when to visit

  • June to August (main call season). The mildest and least windy stretch, with average highs around 12 to 13°C, long daylight, and frequent cloud, breeze and passing rain. Bright spells and squalls trade off through a single day, so pack a waterproof layer.
  • May and September (shoulder calls). Cooler, with highs around 9 to 11°C, more wind and shorter days, and September noticeably wetter than the summer peak.
